Overview of the Examination
The Component 1 paper, Exploring the Media, lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes and carries 80 marks total. The exam is split into two main sections: Section A (approximately 55 minutes) and Section B (approximately 35 minutes).
Section A: Exploring Media Language and Representation
In Section A, you will analyse print media products to explain how media language communicates meaning and how individuals, gender, and social groups are represented.
Print Advertisements: Revise Quality Street (1956) and NHS !111. Focus on how visual codes, typography, and slogans reflect their historical and cultural contexts, as well as how female representations have evolved over time.
Magazine Covers: Review GQ (August 2019) and Vogue (July 2021). Practice analyzing narrative elements, genre conventions, page layout, and how lifestyle magazines construct representations of gender and identity.
Film Marketing (Posters): Study The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) alongside No Time to Die (2021). Compare how poster design, visual codes, star billing, and generic conventions communicate genre and appeal to moviegoers across different eras.
Newspapers (Front Pages): Examine front pages from The Guardian (18 January 2022) and The Sun (01 January 2021). Focus on headline choices, photography, bias, and how different news outlets re-present events and social issues.
Section B: Exploring Media Industries and Audiences
Section B tests your understanding of media ownership, production, regulation, cross-platform convergence, and audience targeting.
Video Games: Focus on Fortnite. Revise its developer (Epic Games), video game regulation, and how official websites and convergent technologies promote the game to engage active players.
Radio: Review Desert Island Discs. Understand its history within talk radio, its public service broadcasting context, and how audiences access episodes via online platforms and podcasts.
Film Industry: Revisit No Time to Die from an industry-only perspective. Analyze the James Bond global franchise, commercial funding, marketing via official 007 websites, and cross-platform media convergence.
Newspapers & Audiences: Study The Sun as an evolving tabloid newspaper. Explore how it targets mass audiences across print and digital platforms, and apply Blumler and Katz’s Uses and Gratifications theory to explain how readers use news websites to satisfy personal needs.
Top Revision Tips
