Year 9 Media Studies – Music Video Production Brief

Project Brief

Your task is to create a 60-second music video for an existing song of your choice. You may choose any genre, but your chosen song must not contain swearing or inappropriate language and should be suitable for a school audience.

Before filming, think carefully about the genre of your song and the conventions that audiences expect. For example, pop videos often use bright colours, energetic performances and fast-paced editing; rock videos may feature live band performances and dramatic lighting; hip-hop videos often focus on confidence, style and storytelling; indie videos may use everyday locations and artistic cinematography; while dance or electronic music videos often rely on rhythm, movement and creative visual effects.

Your music video should include a mixture of performance, narrative (a story), or conceptual ideas, depending on what best suits your chosen song. Remember that every creative decision should match the mood, lyrics and message of the music.

You must also consider representation. Think about how people, places and groups are portrayed in your video. Avoid using stereotypes or creating content that could be offensive or disrespectful. Instead, aim to create positive, realistic or creative representations that are appropriate for your target audience.

As part of your planning, you should consider:

  • Who is your target audience?

  • What genre conventions will you include?

  • How will your camera shots, editing, costume and locations help communicate the genre?

  • How will your video represent people fairly and positively?

Your finished music video should be exactly 60 seconds long and demonstrate a range of filming and editing techniques, such as different camera angles, shot types, transitions and lip-syncing where appropriate.

This project is an opportunity to be creative while applying your understanding of media language, genre and representation. Have fun experimenting with ideas and produce a music video that is engaging, imaginative and appropriate for a school audience.
