How to Be a Great Summariser: bell hooks, Beyoncé and Black Panther

What is a Summariser?
In a Disciplined Discussion, the Summariser is responsible for listening carefully, identifying the strongest arguments and presenting the group's overall conclusions.
Your job isn't simply to repeat what everyone has said. It's to bring different interpretations together and reach a balanced judgement supported by evidence and theory. Let's explore how you might do this when discussing bell hooks, Beyoncé's Formation music video and Marvel's Black Panther (2018).
1. Summarising arguments about Beyoncé's Formation
Your group might argue that Formation challenges traditional representations of Black identity through its celebration of Southern Black culture and references to racial inequality. However, other students might question whether Beyoncé's commercial success turns Black empowerment into a product. As Summariser, you could say:
"Our group agreed that Formation celebrates Black identity and challenges certain stereotypes. However, we also considered bell hooks' criticism of commercialised female empowerment and questioned whether positive representation necessarily challenges capitalism and patriarchy."
2. Summarising arguments about Black Panther
Your group might discuss how Shuri, Okoye and Nakia challenge Hollywood stereotypes by representing Black women as intelligent, independent and powerful. However, the Challenger might question whether Marvel's commercial interests limit the film's progressive messages. You could conclude: "Although Black Panther offers empowering representations of Black women, hooks' theories encourage us to question whether these representations challenge wider systems of inequality." This applies hooks' ideas rather than attributing a direct judgement about the film to her.
3. What makes an effective Summariser?
A successful Summariser:
Listens carefully to everyone's contributions.
Identifies the strongest arguments and evidence.
Recognises different interpretations.
Uses accurate Media Studies terminology.
Presents a balanced, reasoned conclusion.
Useful sentence starters include:
"Our group agreed that…"
"However, an alternative interpretation was…"
"The strongest evidence suggested…"
"On balance, we concluded that…"
Remember
A great Summariser doesn't just repeat the discussion. They explain what the group has learned. Your role is to transform different viewpoints into a clear, thoughtful conclusion that demonstrates a deeper understanding of media representation and theory.
