How to Be a Great Lead Speaker: Discussing bell hooks, Beyoncé and Black Panther

What is a Lead Speaker?
In a Disciplined Discussion, your job as Lead Speaker is to introduce the topic, ask thought-provoking questions and encourage everyone to contribute. You're not there to dominate the conversation or provide all the answers. You're there to help your group explore different interpretations and develop stronger arguments using Media Studies theory. Let's imagine you're leading a discussion about bell hooks, Beyoncé's Formation music video and Marvel's Black Panther (2018).
Starting your discussion
Your debate question is: "To what extent do Formation and Black Panther challenge traditional representations of Black identity?" You could begin by saying:
"I'd like to start by considering how bell hooks' theories help us understand representations of race and gender in Formation and Black Panther. Hooks argued that media representations are influenced by racism, patriarchy and capitalism. She questioned whether representations of powerful Black women necessarily challenge existing inequalities.
In Beyoncé's Formation, we see powerful imagery celebrating Black identity, particularly through references to Southern Black culture, police brutality and Hurricane Katrina.
However, hooks' theories encourage us to question whether Beyoncé's commercial success challenges inequality or turns Black empowerment into something that can be sold.
In Black Panther, characters such as Shuri, Okoye and Nakia challenge traditional Hollywood stereotypes through their intelligence, independence and authority.
But could we argue that Marvel is also selling an idealised version of Black empowerment to global audiences?
Can these media texts genuinely challenge inequality while operating within powerful commercial industries?"
Getting your group involved
Once you've introduced the debate, your responsibility is to involve the other speakers.
Evidence Finder: "Can you identify a specific scene from Formation or Black Panther that challenges traditional stereotypes?"
Challenger: "Could Beyoncé's representation of empowerment reinforce some of the expectations hooks criticised?"
Summariser: "Can you explain which text our group believes offers the stronger challenge to dominant representations, and why?"
Remember to encourage everyone to use terminology such as representation, patriarchy, intersectionality, commodification and oppositional gaze.
What makes an effective Lead Speaker?
A successful Lead Speaker:
Introduces relevant theory.
Uses specific examples from both texts.
Asks open-ended questions.
Encourages alternative interpretations.
Ensures everyone contributes.
Listens and responds thoughtfully.
You are applying hooks' theories to these texts, not claiming she directly evaluated both productions.
Final thought
Being a Lead Speaker isn't about having the loudest voice or winning an argument.
It's about helping your group move beyond personal opinions towards thoughtful, evidence-based analysis. The best Lead Speakers don't simply tell people what to think. They ask questions that make everyone think more deeply.
